[OT] US Presidential Election

Election Day is upon us!

If you don't mind I would like to get a feel for the number of U.S. Bush vs.
Kerry supporters in the Ruby community. I'm doing this in part as a way to
weight the national election day results against the people I interact with
everyday.

If you're not a citizen of U.S. I wouldn't mind hearing your opinions too,
just please state you're not a citizen.

Get out the Vote!

Thanks,
T.

P.S. I'll put my hat in the ring too after this thread gets started some.

There are other candidates, though mainstream press prefer to ignore them. Though at least in AZ they get some coverage.

But please preface all posts with [OT]. And no flames, trolls, all that good stuff.

And please no feeding the trolls, mmmmmmmm-kay?

Please.

I didn't get registered this year. If I don't have enough time to do proper research on the people are wanting to be elected for next term, I don't vote at all. Voting takes careful study on each person wanting to be next president. The whole republican/democrate parties don't matter to me unless the Republican is a true conservatists(thinks stem cell research is bad etc(different topic, but one doesnt need embryos for stem cells, adults produce them))

What was truely upsetting about the debates and all the nastiness is both of them said christopher reeves would have been living from stem cell research which is total crock. Election debates and all the political mudslinging doesn't prove either person to be better for the job.

I feel extremely bad for the first time voters, they don't know what they are doing when they vote. First time voters don't study the issues unfortunately, and each first time voter I have asked can't give a real explanation that doesn't have to do with the mudslinging slogans(tv, papers, debates, etc).

I'm voting for Kerry this year, and have volunteered a little bit this year to help with the Democratic get-out-the-vote operations. I'm actually much further left than Kerry, but if he gets in the White House I'll consider that a big sign of progress.

Voting for Bush.

-Matt Margolis

i still haven't decided if i can bring myself to vote. i will state an
opinion that i think is relevant for kerry supporters though: if you drive to
the polls to vote for kerry on tuesday you are casting two votes - one for
kerry and one for bush. if you wake up on wednesday and drive to work again
you will cast another vote for bush. of this much i am certain. whether or
not i cast a paper ballot for kerry tomorrow i will continue to vote 'against'
bush (and all the other oil men waiting in the wings) by riding my bicycle to
work every day. in this capitalist society we have many opportunities to vote
- please use them.

i sincerely hope that this election will not be divisive for the country or
the world - and that includes this group.

Do you really think this is a good idea?

I mean, we should be encouraging everyone in the US to vote tomorrow, but
don't you think that having people declare a candidate here might cause
divisions on the list?

Phil

I am neither a Kerry or Bush supporter. Idealy I would vote
Libertarian, however at this point I feel it is more essential to get
Bush out of office than Bardarnik in, especially since the chances of
Bardarnik getting elected are very slim. Next election I promise to go
Liberatarian, but Bush is scary.

Oh, nos!! Flamewar!
People loved Ike, they loved Nixon, they loved JFK, they loved Reagan, they
loved Clinton. But nobody in their right mind seems to like either of these
guys. Personally, I don't really like Kerry or Bush. Most people seem to be
voting /against/ one of the candidates rather than for either of them. I
definitely dislike Kerry more, but I was actually leaning towards Badnarik.
A couple of things changed my mind:
  1. Osama bin Laden announced in his recent video that he does not want
you to vote for GWB. I consider that fairly good proof that
GWB's actions cause problems for bin Laden.
  2. The last poll I saw showed Kerry up only 7 points in my home state.
It's rare that the democratic candidate does not win California,
and this state is one of the ones Kerry is counting on. If I can
push things that much closer to keeping Kerry out of the White
House, then I'm more than happy to.

Also, uh, please don't flame me because I don't like your guy.

I shouldn't answer this at all, as some of my comrades here will (I know)
disapprove of this whole thread.

The main reason I'm answering is that I'm tired of keeping quiet. For more
months than I can count, I have felt surrounded by people (online and off)
who not only believed the opposite from me, but (which is the worst part)
*assumed* that I agreed with them.

I am a Bush supporter. I don't agree with everything he says and does, not
by a long shot, but the more I look at Kerry, the more I like Bush.

Having said that, my opinion of people on here will not change. Why should
it? I already knew that a large percentage of them disagreed with me.

I have close friends offline and even relatives who disagree with me. They
are still my friends and relatives.

There are so many interesting asymmetries in American politics. It has
always seemed to me that the two major parties have their own strengths
and weaknesses. The liberal wing has a gift of PR and media-consciousness.
So much discourse is framed in their terms because they coined those terms.

I used to wonder how anyone could deny a liberal bias in the media. One
answer, of course, is that very few people actually perceive themselves
as extremists. Whatever group controls the media gets the chance to
define "normalcy" in some sense; they see their own views as moderate or
centrist. Naturally anything else will appear "off center" to them.

You'd be surprised how many of the standard characterizations of Republicans
I disagree with. They are not the party of the rich or the party of the white
male; they are not on the whole "haters," bigots, or anti-environmentalists.
But the "dictionaries" of our society tend to say so -- using that word
metaphorically -- given that the majority of the dictionary-writers are of
the opposite party.

But I have said too much. Perhaps I will wish later I had hit Cancel instead
of Send. But here goes.

In the interests of keeping this group on-topic, please reply off-list
or (preferably) not at all. I'll try to post something about Ruby now, to
help offset this off-topic post.

I'm Australian, and I support Mr. Bush despite, let's say, recent foreign
policy shortcomings. I don't think the lack of major terrorist attacks in
US, UK, Australia, since 11 September 2001, is accidental, and well done to
those who have made it so. But obviously I don't get to vote.

You Americans all should, though. We have compulsory voting here, and it's a
good thing. Yes, you get uninformed votes, but you do anyway, and it's a
good encouragement to understand the issues and get involved with steering
your country's direction.

This thread is off-topic, and while I think it's good to air this stuff and
maybe get a feel for where ruby-talk stands politically, I won't post more
than this once.

Cheers,
Dave

I *think* that a lot of people here in Europe are hoping that Bush
doesn't win.

My hope was that this list could be free of the foreign election and people making asses of themselves.

A pox on both your houses.

I'm voting Kerry because I'm strongly anti-Bush, though online polls tell me my views are far closer to Libertarian and Green party candidates' than to Kerry's.
