RubyForge themes

Howdy -

Eero Saynatkari has been working on a couple new RubyForge themes; you
can get an idea where he's going with them here:

http://support.rubyforge.org/themes/red/
and here:
http://support.rubyforge.org/themes/blue/

Any comments on these would be welcome...

Yours,

Tom

I find this very classy, for what it's worth.

I love blue, but on this case it hurts the eye. The red is better there.

I like the red theme. It's more utilitarian and it cuts right to the chase, not wasting valuable space on non-essential stuff. I don't like the blue theme, both because it's hard to read the text against the blue background and because blue is not a very rubyish theme

One other thing. It seems like the margins around different sections are too big. Right now they are about 1.5 cm. I would reduce that to .5 or less.

They are both very nice. The red is better because it is easier on the eyes and to read.

The blue could be just as nice as red with some color changing. Don't put light text on a dark background for an informative page. Make the text darker, and the background color it sits on lighter. Also white text is never easy to read. The background blue for the whole page is a nice color, but the other blue (that has white text on it) should change.

Is it possible for Eero to add some images for the buttons or to go next to heading? I wouldn't mind drawing some up and sending them to Eero to see how it looked. I think that would help separate some of the things on the pabge because there is just so much bold-text use all over.

The red theme is much easier on the eyes.

maybe... too much red. Ok I know ruby is suypposed to be red, but imo not everything on a web page has got to be red. It is a nice theme, anyway. Maybe the fontsize of links could be a little bigger.

and here:

mh.. visited links are hard to read..

anyway, just my two cents, thanks for any effort

Between the two I prefer the red; I'd concur with
others' remarks that it's easier on the eyes.

I wanted to mention that the font sizes on the page
appear to be fixed in a way that prevents my font
size preferences (in IE, View->Text Size->Larger)
from taking effect.

(No matter the font size setting, nothing on the page
changes.) . . . . This has the effect of kind of
cancelling out the "easy on the eyes" aspect, as I
have to squint to read the text. But it looks
nice.

red +1. The default font is really small of the several machines I
looked at it on. (Firefox). I know I can it, but ... just had to
mention.

I think it's nice, slim and to the point.

I prefer the Red one though having a bit more contrast in it might be nice.

Another small issue is that the margins don't seem to make sense completely -- e.g. in the right sidebar there's more margin between the heading and the content than between different sections and the content is sometimes bigger than the headlines.

Something similar applies for the "Latest News" headline -- it does not look like a headline at all.

Nothing too important, but it's still a bit confusing when you're just scanning the page.

To my eye, the colors are not nearly as important as the contrast. Give me dark text on a light background any day (red theme). Light text on a dark background gives me a headache (blue theme).

This one is completely unreadable because it has wrong colors

and here:
http://support.rubyforge.org/themes/blue/

This one gets the colors right (probably because it is the inversion of
default IE colors so it has to change them all) but the colors are not
easy to read and the font is way too small.
I set the browser default font size to something that is readable
but not huge and try to avoid sites that use smaller letters.

I like the idea of dark background but it must be done right so that the
text is easily readable.

Thanks

The pervasive brick-red text and trim makes everything blend together. It looks clean, to be sure, but I'd prefer some cooler colors.

and here:
http://support.rubyforge.org/themes/blue/

White text on dark backgrounds hurts my eyes before too long.
The white text on almost-white-but-sort-of-blue is nearly invisible.

In general: Use dark text on light background. Save warm coolers for specific items of importance. Don't feel compelled to use red everywhere.

I agree about the font size and about the colour. It's nice, but too much. Maybe some complementary or analogous colour or something?

I like the red version. Althugh the blue version is prettier, the red is easier for me to read.

And I really like the data format in both saying what has been going on and what people are interested in.

I would go with red, increase a bit the text size and add some images,
but Red definitely.

Why images? Do we inherently need images on web pages? And as for the
text size...I'd say that you have a point, but I think that the CSS
should be very restrictive in dictating font-size. Just leave it at
whatever the user chooses, unless there's a need for a special
font-size.

The red theme is very pretty. The blue, not so much so. I could
definitely live with working with the red theme. There are still some
"off by one"-pixel problems, but it still looks very pretty.

IMHO a few images, even just a logo add some life and dynamism to the page.

Default size should be good however. The user shouldn't need to
increase character size to read the page
