I’m not sure about this. It seems to me that there is a lot of evidence in
the life-sciences, the business world, and other places to show that things
(life, businesses, software) flourish in an atmosphere of competition.

To put it another way, a friend of mine told me that it doesn’t make any
sense to standardize on one way of doing things before many ways have been
tried. Only with experience can you (or the market) judge whether one thing
is better than another.

I think we need to try several ways of using Ruby. The best (possibly more
than one) will come out ahead and will be supported by a large group.

I'm not sure about this. It seems to me that there is a lot of evidence in

Do you remember the "beautiful mind". John Nash got his nobel price
for economy because he showed that this is not the truth (at least in
most cases).

To put it another way, a friend of mine told me that it doesn't make any
sense to standardize on one way of doing things before many ways have been
tried. Only with experience can you (or the market) judge whether one thing
is better than another.

But not everyone must try the same one hundered ways of doing for
every language. Sorry this is stupid. We have to learn from all given
input. Ruby is not much more different then others. And in fact in
99% it is not another way but simply the same way with a little
variant of personal style.
