I know this is way off topic, but I was wondering if anyone associated with
Ruby would need a Japanese translator, for the documentation or for
translating materials like the Rubyist Magazine (by Nihon no Ruby no Kai)
and so on?

The English, Spanish, and German variants have been done with
variants of ISO-8859. There is a specific encoding value at the head
of the messages file. This isn't completely safe, as it will force
that encoding on the entire page, not just the labeled portions --
so I need to investigate what can be done for that. Thus, it should
be pretty easy.
However, given that it's a web app with input, Ruwiki will work far
better with UTF-8 (I know that's not a popular choice for Japanese)
and I will be happy to make necessary changes to the Ruwiki code in
the new year (I am finishing up a quick project before going on a
short vacation) to properly and fully support Ruwiki with Japanese.
I don't necessarily expect a lot of Ruwiki users in Japan -- both
tDiary and hiki appear to be very popular there -- but I do want
this to be a fully multilingual and internationalized Wiki.
