ModuleBuilder started

hey -talk,

A few of us Denver-based ruby hackers have started on a project entitled
ModuleBuilder,
in hopes that this would fill the same role as the Perl module Module::Build
(which is intended to replace ExtUtils::MakeMaker).
The purpose of this project is to provide a programmatic and command-line
interface to the configuration, installation and meta-information of any
given package.
We do not intend this to fill the role of raa-install, rpkg or any other
package-management utility,
but rather something on the level of mkmf and install.rb.

This email is a request for suggestions for this project.
There has already been much discussion of the need for this sort of thing,
and for as much as we could find/remember/understand,
we have included those ideas in this project,
but it is unlikely that we have been complete.
We would like to make sure that what we intend for this is on target with
what the rest of the community desires.
Developers on the various package-management systems will be most effected
by this project,
and so we are especially interested to hear from them.
One suggestion that seems particularly important is that something be
adopted as a standard.
Successfully filling the needs of the community seems the best and maybe
only way for something like this to become a standard,
and so we ask that those with needs be sure to voice them.

We have started a SourceForge project page,
located at:
http://ModuleBuilder.sf.net
and we would ask that you direct all general suggestions, comments and
questions there,
either to the forums, feature requests or mailing list,
so as to clutter this list a little less.

Thanks,
