Is there any chance of getting the ruby.org domain?

It seems to me that it would be much easier if the Ruby community had
the ruby.org domain for everything Ruby.

When I go to www.ruby.org it redirects to www.netidentity.com offering
me to use ruby.org for my email address.

Is there any chance of buying the domain from them? Has anyone made any
approaches to them with the possibility of buying the domain name?

I’m sure this has come up before but I could not find it in a search for
"ruby.org" in Google groups.

In their FAQ, they claim they wouldn’t sell their domains. Sad.
But it may be worth to challenge them anyway.

						matz.

No harm in asking. Maybe we can workout something.
They are not using “ruby.org” for anything really. They are just offering
addresses of the form ‘name.ruby.org’. Perhaps we can get the domain and
agree to let them keep the *.ruby.org addresses they already assigned.

NetIdentity sells “designer” email address (and optional web sites). That’s
where I got my email address - curt@hibbs.com - based on my name.
NetIdentity bought thousands of domains of peoples last names and various
other words (like “ruby”) and sells email addresses.

So, it may appear that they are not using ruby.org, but they very well may
have sold and service hundreds of email addresses based on ruby.org. That
being the case, it is unlikely that they would give up the domain.

What about using one of the newly released top-level domains like ruby.int
(int=International).

…int has been in place for many years now and is reserved for international
organisations created with a treaty like NATO, ESA and Eurocontrol.
