Hail?

I noticed a new entry in the RAA for a 3-D game called Hail, described as “free 3d gladiatorial combat game for windows.”

http://raa.ruby-lang.org/list.rhtml?name=hail

Curious, I followed the link to download, and ended up at GameSpy FilePlanet, which requires a tedious, and rather nosy,
registration process before you are allowed to download anything.

Finally, your choices for download sites are restricted to a few S L O W sites, unless you choose to subscribe to something or
other. Through all of this I never found anything that mentioned Ruby.

I E-mailed the owners of the project, expressing my distaste for the whole download process, and asked what part Ruby played in
this. I haven’t heard back, and was wondering if anybody here knows something about the game.

I’m thinking that either a) whoever added the RAA entry doesn’t really know what RAA is for, or b) put the entry there for the sole
purpose of driving traffic to the game (which likely has nothing to do with Ruby).

I did much the same research you did, and was coming to
the same conclusions.

But then I noticed a name “Lorien Dunn” among the list
of programmers. The name tickled a neuron or two, so I
did a search and found that he has posted here many
times in the past.

I didn’t investigate further. But this certainly increases
the credibility of the RAA entry in my eyes.

But I’m also curious as to what part Ruby played
in this, assuming it did.

Maybe this is a sign of Ruby’s popularity – spamming the RAA

I saw Lorien’s name, too, so I figured it was probably legitimate in
some very unclear way

I see an entry on their “News” page, under August 11, reading “Scripting
support added”. Maybe Ruby is used as a scripting language of some kind
for the game engine?

I received a reply about Hail from Neil Boyd, HAIL Lead Design. The game is legit. Ruby is used to script certain features; that
part was done by Lorien Dunn.

FilePlanet.com was used because it is hard to find places willing to host large downloads, and that site is known to gamers. While
non-subscribers are limited in the choices of download sites, downloading at an off-hour shouldn’t be a problem.

Some time ago, Lorien sent me a number of E-mails describing the role of
Ruby on his project; I in turn posted that information to ruby-talk. I
think if you search the ruby-talk archives you should find tose posts
and get a better idea of how Ruby is used.

Something is rotten in Denmark, to quote Shakespeare.

The thread below is literally MONTHS old, exactly how old
I can’t recall.

Some kind of gateway glitch or what??

Perhaps. After I sent the reply, I saw other messages that I’m sure
first appeared some months ago.
