Given that date it is a very good idea to send this to the list -
otherwise some people might switch on CNN to see if something
terrible is going on in Japan…

… which, given the problems CNN journalists seem to have with
geography [1], would probably give them the idea that Japan has vanished
altogether.

You are sure that Germans are any better? We call the United Kingdom
of Great Britain and Northern Ireland ‘Great Britain’. We call Xizang
Zizhiqu ‘Tibet’, most of us are not aware that the Russian Federation
and the United States of America are neighbors and so are Russia and
Japan.

Recently my parents bought something built at Guangzhou. I was quite
irritated not to find that city (with 5+ million inhabitants) under
its modern name - it was only labelled as Kanton.

Well, that’s at least true for the Atlas my parents have. In the one
I personally own (a German translation of the World Atlas published
by Dorling Kindersley, London) it is labelled ‘Guangzhou (Kanton)’.
I have an Atlas that lists the city as Kanton but that book was
published in 1928.
