Hi, I found those few mails and felt appropriate to comment on them:

Over on the pragprog list, Ron Jeffries suggested that it might be
interesting to implement Ruby in Ruby. I thought – but could not find
quickly – that someone had started such a project. I realise right now
that this might be much slower, but it would seem to me to make it
easier to make something like Rite or some other bytecode system
possible, wouldn’t it?

It’s Ryan Davis aka zenspider. You can also google for “MetaRuby”.
And then I dug out:

MetaRuby is cool. Will that approach become part of
core Ruby? Seems it would have some nice advantages. What are reasons
why it perhaps should not, if there are any?
So Ron Jeffries originally expressed interest in my project, called
MetaRuby. There is another person, Ryan Davis, who has very recently been
creating a completely separate project with seemingly nothing in common
except for the general intent, and he calls his project MetaRuby. I have
not been able to find any release of his. Mine is available as usual at
www.ruby-lang.org/raa and cvs.ruby-lang.org, although I have not worked on
it recently. Questions may be sent to matju@sympatico.ca; I am not
currently subscribed to ruby-talk.
