Even Java with its bytecodes isn’t immune to reverse engineering,
just read up about the Mocha decompiler. Of course, in the land of
the free they can now lock you up (under the DMCA) for even thinking
about using it :-). Without a CPU that contains a root public key
to use in decrypting opcodes after they’re fetched, you’re basically
hosed… and even then, there are smart folk with $10E6+ ion probes
who will rewire the circuitry of a chip to get at the hidden innards.
It’s all a cost/benefit tradeoff. According to the quotable quote
from “Les Liaisons Dangereuses”: “There is no impenetrable fortress,
only a fortress inadequately assailed” :-).
