Please stop top posting (TOFU)

Hi group,

I just wanted to catch up with my backlog (quite big) of unread posts
in this mailing list, but had to realize that browsing through the
discussions is a nightmare these days: most posts seem to consist of
one or two lines of contribution, and 100+ lines of all previous posts,
fully quoted, with dozens of "Unsubscribe" and "Sent from my ...phone"
footers and overly verbose email signatures, with logos and silly
legal disclaimers...

Once upon a time it was good practice around here to use plain text
emails, trim quotations to only the relevant part, and use inline
quoting style
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posting_style#Interleaved_style).

Maybe I'm getting too old for this list...

Sorry for the noise,
Marcus

thanks for the reminder.

Very true. I find this very, very, annoying also.

"Unsubscribe" and "Sent from my ...phone" footers

The unsubscribe footers have recently been introduced to make people not
always write "unsubscribe" messages to the main ML. The phone footers
are annoying.

No, it is that people are not made aware of the list etiquette. If
nobody critises people who don’t follow the rules, then nobody will
follow the rules.

Greetings
Marvin

Completely agree, but the problem is that Gmail, by default, adds all the
previous email quoted along with the signature.

Unsubscribe: <mailto:ruby-talk-request@ruby-lang.org?subject=unsubscribe>

Hi
We should send an unsubscribe mail each month (week) with a specific
subject, and drop the signature in every mail.

I read and reply via gmail and can be done safely

Please, don't do that! Two lines of pure text do no harm at all, and
they are just the perfect solution to the problem of the trickle of
'please unsubscribe me' messages. Those people want an immediate
solution to their need, and a weekly/monthly message is far from
immediate.

Yes, and you managed to quote the entire message below your post, which
is exactly what you shouldn’t do.

It's not me deciding this
Berg

I agree with plain text, bottom-posting, and snipping quotes. However, this
is an issue that will not die any time soon, and we're wasting too many
electrons on it.
