My lab workstation is redhat3 and the ruby version is 1.6.8.

How do I update ruby version to 1.9.x?

Google 'ruby rvm'.

Note that RHEL3 went end-of-life over a year ago. You will be getting no
security patches. Your machine will become increasingly likely to be
p0wned.
