Any hint on how to:
1 - login to a website?
2 - Search the site?
You've got a couple options, either interacting with the HTTP stream
directly or interacting with a web browser. If you don't mind limiting
your application to Windows, you could use the IE Controller which is
now called WTR and available here: http://rubyforge.org/projects/wtr\. I
was just writing a program yesterday to look up people's phone numbers
using www.whitepages.com. WTR isn't documented very well, but if I can
figure it out, anyone can.

The code base for wtr is migrating to WATIR at the same url. There are
quite a few unit tests, and several sample scripts. Let me know if you
need help with it.
Another option is the CURL library. You could execute curl commands
in backticks for a quick-and-dirty solution or check out _why's
explanation of Ruby/DL for a more elegant solution. He specifically
demonstrates a little example with libcurl.
