[snip]

I wouldn’t try to argue about performance because it’s good enough
for me. I suspect most people wouldn’t have a problem either.
Unfortunately it seems to be one of those pissing contest issues
like a PCs Mhz value…

…which rather reminds me of some of the discussions on Compuserve at the
start of the 90’s where people would ask “which is faster, VB or C”, to
which the answer (from the VB side) was usually “VB, by about 6 months”

For me the main concern about a language is how easy it is to
write and
maintain programs in it, and Ruby kicks seven shades out of any other
language I’ve used for that.

(C/Java/Perl/shell/PHP/FORTRAN/Vual Bic).

Indeedy. If I’ve got a job that needs to run inside 30sec and Ruby does it
in 20, I’m less than concerned that C++ might do it in 0.2. If it has to go
faster than ‘straight’ Ruby, I can always recode the bottleneck in something
else that takes longer to write and keep most of the code (and hence most of
the flexibility) where I want it.

AMAZING BUT TRUE …
There is so much sand in Northern Africa that if it were spread out it
would completely cover the Sahara Desert.
