We're offering the paper book, a fully hyperlinked PDF version, and a combo pack that contains the two. Despite the fact that the new book is more than 250 pages bigger than the old, we've managed to keep the price about the same. We've also found some good shipping options for folks buying the book outside the US.
The book will ship from our store in the first week in October. Bookstores and places such as Amazon will have it some time after that (it takes some time to percolate through the channels). We'll ship books in the order we receive orders, so pre-order now and be one of the first to have a shiny new PickAxe!
Add another name to the list of pre-orders. From the TOC it
looks to be exactly the type of book I look for. Really
looking for word to an early X-mas present in Oct!
I am constantly in my HTML ProgrammingRuby directory, grepping for stuff.
But you can't grep a PDF.
My pre-order for v2 is already with Amazon, incidentally
Regards,
Brian.

I've been thinking hard about that. Here's the issue. In order to protect the books while being shipped, we pay the printer a bit extra and have our copies shrinkwrapped (the ones that go to regular booksellers are not). Either Andy or I could sign copies we send, but it would mean removing the shrinkwrap.
Now, we ship in either padded envelopes or in bubble wrap, but even so you might find that a corner gets dinged without the shrinkwrap to protect the book as it is inserted.
So, here's the question: I'd be more than happy to sign the pre-orders I ship, and Andy would do the same. Would folks be OK with that if it meant removing the wrap?
Alternatively, we could include with each a signed card or label that you could insert into the book after opening it. Would that work?
Cheers

Mmmm, spotted that yesterday and I am a bit torn. Part of me wants to
support them by direct ordering the book / pdf combo and the
cheapskate part wants to get the book from Amazon UK and just buy the
PDF from the PragProg. Its why I asked in another thread if the book
would be signed (i.e. a value added version, which is an easier sell
to the wife than I want to support the authors)
In Belgium, at current exchange rates, it's about 1.5 EUR cheaper to buy
the book/PDF combo from the PragProgs directly than to order the book from
amazon.co.uk and the PDF from the PragProgs. I guess that settles it for
me.
Cancel that. Didn't notice Global Priority Express is available, saving an
extra $8.85. That's without taxes, but that should only be a few euros.
Just for those interested...
We don't have any kinds of DRM in the PDFs we produce, so there's no way to assign a license to someone else. This is a matter of policy: we dislike crippled PDFs, and won't distribute them.
With a paper book, if you loan it to someone else, you lose the use of it for that period. Without DRM, we have no way of enforcing the equivalent with PDFs. We prefer to trust the folks who buy them.

So what's the digital equivalent of leaving your book on his desk for

You may not be able to grep a PDF, but you can search within most PDF
readers. Also, there are a number of PDF-to-{HTML,plaintext,...}
converters, which you could always try.

Certainly for me I would be more than happy to have the wrap removed.
I've had a few books come over from the US and all have arrived intact
so I am happy to trust them. If it doesn't, hey its my own fault
Anyway the book is bound to arrive in better nic that the copy of the
1st Ed that I ordered from Amazon UK. The colour was very dull from a
collection of dirty marks on the cover.
Alternatively, we could include with each a signed card or label that
you could insert into the book after opening it. Would that work?
Cards are easily lost and depending on the size of your natural
signature, you might need a huge label Plus its extra expense to
get either of those things.

And for that I am grateful, I strongly dislike DRM and had you used it
I wouldn't have bought the electronic versions of your starter kit
books. BTW I do like your system of embedding our names in the digital
book.

To me a signed copy doesn't signify. It's the book I'm after, not the signature. (I've never understood book "collectors" who keep pristine signed copies, that they never read for fear of damaging.)
So I'd *prefer* the bubble-wrapped version, but don't really care. Do what's easiest.

I'm not a book collector and the book probably won't remain in pristine condition for very long. I have read several of Dave and Andy's books and I find them very insightful, helpful and inspiring. I would be delighted to have a signed copy of the book.
I appreciate people even more when they show that they appreciate others. This just makes Dave and Andy standout from the crowd of authors in my "book".
