What's with all these spam messages?

Hi Jesus,

(I'm so happy I can talk directly to "Jesus" )

In this recent event, pre-approving users would be of no help.
The e-mail was with a crafted header pretending it comes from my
address, ryan's address and the others.

Perhaps we could just have the list run unmoderated, but having more
people with permissions to block IPs would be great in events like
this.

Hi Shugo,

And what about to have the list moderated, or at least have a group of
moderators (even if the list is not set to be moderated). So, if we
have such annoying event like this at the future, there's more than
one person to ask help for.

I would suggest at least 10 moderators in different time zones.
You could get the oldest (in Ruby years) people over here, grant some
permissions at the list server and see how it works. People like Ryan
Davis, Xavier Noria, and others could be of great help to keep the
list running.

And, if you really think about setting the list to "moderated" with a
list of at least 10 moderators there'll be not too much delay between
sending the message and it being approved by any of the moderators.

What do you think about it?

And thanks for fixing it.

I think moderating all messages is too heavy.
Some lists moderate just the first message of each user, to ensure
it's a real human sending something on-topic.
What about that?

Jesus.

Yes Ryan,

You expressed better what is my intent.

If moderation is too hard...
We could just have more people able to readly stop the attacker and
check what is happening.

Best regards,
Abinoam Jr.

Please no moderation (as others suggested) for ruby-talk,

Moderation in the sense that we have admin access and can turn on mailman's emergency moderation bit on (stop all delivery) until the real admin can deal with something like this. It could have quelled the flood in the first couple hours if we had someone in PST and UTC with mod bits.

Hope something is being done to avoid all these spam messages cause they
are just too much.

Ruth and others:

No need for you to get too excited about that rubbish, for two reasons:

1. If you have gmail account, and you clearly do, their spam filter will
pick up all such messages, IF you use it right. If you don't know how, read
in the gmail help documentation about it.

I identified several such spam messages in the recent burst to the gmail
filter, and from then on it caught all of them for me.

If someone does not use gmail, get an account, then direct your email to
that account, and send it on from there to your PC email client
program. This way you can keep your preferred email address and still pass
everything through gmail's excellent spam filter. (This is what I use MY
gmail account for.)

2. You can be assured that the wizards associated with ruby-talk, etc.,
will not sit still for this recent assault. They will do what is needed to
fix the problem, although it may take a few days. It appears that this has
in fact happened.

My thoughts, for what they're worth.

Tom

I'm sure Yahoo and the other major only email account providers could be
use in the same way.

Interesting. I used to do that, but then I read somewhere that flashing
mailing list messages as spam could cause the whole list to be considered
spam. I take it that hasn't happened to you.

If someone does not use gmail, get an account, then direct your email to

Honestly, how can you owe a mail list? Simply by spamming it with a bunch
of random strings? (That's what it wrote in the recieved spam emails)
