Hi,

I have been thinking about something for some time now, and I
wanted to
get some feedback from the list. Would it be
feasible/possible/wise to
craft a desktop environment using Ruby as its backbone? I am quite
unhappy with the state of both GNOME and KDE, and I find the idea
of a
Ruby desktop exciting. Some parts need to be fast (some window
manager
stuff, e.g.), but other things, including most application logic,
could
be in pure Ruby, I think.

Great idea.
IIRC, Andy/Dave worked on a window manager written in Ruby. Am I right?

We had a window manager that used components written in Ruby, mostly
for decoration.

Matju is busy writing an interface to XLib, so it will be easier to
write a lot more of the window manager in Ruby soon.

Has there been any progress on this? A window manager in Ruby sounds
like a great idea!

Cheers,

Erik.

Erik,

there’s is one already actually: Ruby-Wise (see RAA) it is under
development by the great Kero van Gelder. also Ruby-Wise has moved to a

a Ruby based Desktop sounds very interesting. and is something i would
very much like to participate in, when the time is right. but currently
we have to pan out the lower level stuff first.

i wonder if Matju would be interested in working with Kero on Wise?

I had a look at the CVS version of Ruby-Wise, but I don’t see a relation
between Ruby-Wise and a window manager, it seems more like a graphical
toolkit to me (a very promising one nonetheless).

Ok, I will have a look at GUtopIa as well.

IMHO Ruby desktop != Ruby window manager (although Ruby desktop was the
topic of the original thread).

A Ruby window manager would probably be simpler than an entire desktop,
something like the Ruby equivalent of:
