Guys,
I realize that 1.9 will be a "dev" release, similar to the Linux
kernel. I'm curious, though, given the speed improvements, do folks
intend to use this for production use? Is it likely that many
applications will be switched to run on 1.9, or is this completely
unwise?
And, given that, is there any timeline for 2.0? A year? Two?

It's pretty difficult to predict, since it's not really a technical
question. At lease, some of us already use 1.9 for their daily
scripting.
And, given that, is there any timeline for 2.0? A year? Two?
There's no timeline for 2.0. We haven't even started working on it.
