Octal in pack/unpack

Is the format string in pack/unpack “sacred” (i.e. it has to be
standard/compatible with Perl/the world, much like sprintf() or
strftime())? I was wondering why it supports “h” and “H” but not “o” and
"O" (for octal). Can it perhaps be added in the future (providing the
format is not sacred).
