That's a great help James, thank you. I checked out the website but unfortunately there is no indication that JRuby, like Jython, compiles the scripts/modules into Java bytecode.

Jruby has some code towards being a bytecode compiler, but not to the
level where it works (and I do not know how close it is to working).
The person who was working on it has not did anything with it in over
a year. This feature is not likely to happen soon (unless someone
picks up the torch).
