It’s a spammer. I’ve been reporting them (and another obnoxious spammer
who’s spammed me 6 separate times today so far) all afternoon.

Did anybody come up with a means to lock the list down to
subscribers-only posting without alienating the mail<->news gateway?
Could the gateway have its own list posting address, while setting
"Reply-To:" to be the news poster’s address (not that many of them seem
to be valid return addresses anyway)?

On a related note, I finally updated my sendmail not to dump mail from
those people whose from domains aren’t real so I could see if there’s
good content coming from the newsgroup. I had been bouncing
non-resolving names like someone@NOSPAMHAHAIM1337mydomain.com
automatically, as I’m sure a number of other MTAs are set to do (this
was the sendmail default and actually took some doing to reverse), since
that tends to cut down on the most moronic batch of spammers.

It works. But he says
random email haiku | it is tentative and we
will see how things go.

It does - the list isn’t open because of the gateway.

You’re right (I’d misremembered the thread starting at [ruby-talk:39724]).

So why is it the mailing list allows anyone in the world to post?
