I really have no idea because I myself do not use rdoc nor gem server.

From the short description, that seems to improve a status quo though,
as it only adds a feature without breaking anything, right? In that
case, if true, I could not see why anyone would object it.

+1 from me. I've had times where this would've been convenient. I was
running a gem server and the one gem who's rdocs I wanted to view
didn't have them. It would've been cool to just be able to click a
link and have the built automatically.
