DC Travel Advice (was Re: Hi, Paul...)

I gather from your -talk post that you're in the DC area.

Yeah, I live in Annandale, VA (about 15 minutes out 66W from DC).

I'm trying to figure out the best way to get around that weekend --
I'll be flying into Baltimore actually. What do you suggest?

The _cheapest_ way to get from BWI to the DC area is probably the BWI
shuttle to the DC metro green line. Here's a URL describing that metro:

  http://www.bwiairport.com/4grndtrn/in_mb.shtml

Then ride the metro to closest stop to the hotel, which is the
Dunn-Loring stop on the orange line, then take a cab out to the hotel
area.

Here's a map of the DC area metro lines:

  http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm

The closest you can get to the expo center on the metro is the
Dunn-Loring stop, because in order to get to the Expo center, you'll
have to hop on 495N and take the Dulles Toll Road.

Here's a quick picture showing the route I'm describing:

  http://paulduncan.org/files/bwi_to_expo_center.jpg

In the picture above, the red is the shuttle from BWI to the DC Metro
green line, the green is the DC Metro (green line and orange line), the
red line is the cab from the DC Metro to the Expo center, and the pirate
flag is where I live (yarr mateys!).

One other thought: if BWI has a shuttle to Reagan (e.g. National), then
it might be cheaper to take that shuttle, then catch the metro from
Reagan to the Dunn-Loring stop, then take a cab to the hotel.

It's also possible the hotel might have a shuttle to BWI, if it does, it
might be cheaper than the path I mentioned above.

There's always a rental car, but it would be nice to avoid the expense.

Unfortunately you'll need to take either a car or a cab to at least the
metro if you plan on going in to DC, Alexandria, Anapolis, or anything
people want to visit in the DC area.

Thanks for any recommendations...

No problemo. I'm Ccing this message to the ruby-talk mailing list in
case the information is useful for anyone else.
