Archno Ruby

I've been using this editor, and so far it's pretty nice, if a bit
unfinished. It's got some great features, and I highly recommend
checking it out. Personally, though, I won't be purchasing until a
'complete' version is released, as it is nearly impossible to find
answers to some questions. For example - how in the world do I invoke
a template? I've been looking all over the place trying to find this,
but haven't been able to do so yet.

There's been alot of talk on the list about IDE's, and Arachno really
has potential.

What do you mean by template? Like pressing ar and this expanding to attr_reader?

If so than: Ctrl+J is my mapping for it, and it can be found on Edit -> Code Templates.

Ok, was that documented somewhere, but I looked all over the place to
find that... Thanks for the help.

I haven't read any documentation, but I've found it ;-). I am eagerly waiting for the 0.7 version as Lother said nice stories about it (Lothar hint hint  ).

Hello Josh,

Ok, was that documented somewhere, but I looked all over the place to

Yes and no, for finding the keystrokes you have to look at the menus.
Be a little bit carefull with the templates. I'm currently trying
to make ArachnoRuby scriptable to user by writting python/ruby
scripts. When this is done i want to change the algorithm behind the
template expander. (It's now more or less the same you find in
CodeRush for Delphi - but it's functionallity is not powerfull
enough).

So some day your templates will not work anymore.

And i completely understand that you don't want to purchase now, just
don't forget to come back in April/May next year when i hope the 1.0
release is ready (with documentation, more features and lesser bugs).

If you want some first hand perspective. My company purchased a number
of copies, based upon it as a source code browser if for no other
purpose. Lothar has been responsive to our requests. It is still rough
around the edges (we have had a couple crashes), and some features are
missing (but planned) - but it breathes Ruby, code navigation is very
good.

For me personally it starts up a little slow (I was previously used to
invoking my editor from the command line and editing right away -- I
have become accustom to leaving it running and task switching to it).

I am also eagerly awaiting 0.7

Yeah, probably I should have mentioned that I am registered user too ;-). And compaired to anything else I have tried (and yeah, I am not a emacs/vim guy) it's amazing.

Hy,

there are some advantages in using a general purpose editor. I don't
like emacs/vi either because to be really efficient in emacs one needs
to learn elisp, and vi is trully hard to learn.

But there are other usefull editors like Eclipse / jEdit. The RDE
plugin for Eclipse is far from being complete, but it has very good
potential (if only people started using it).
I also love SciTE for fast editing.

Hello bonefry,

But there are other usefull editors like Eclipse / jEdit. The RDE
plugin for Eclipse is far from being complete, but it has very good
potential (if only people started using it).

In the past everybody said that FreeRIDE will be the clear winner,
just because the plug-in architecture is very flexible. We see that
this is just one point among many that make a good environment.

The problem is not the potential, there Eclipse is far better as
it is a great framework. It is that somebody must do the work
(continously), and as i think i'm the only one who is working full
time on that, so this is my advantage. I'm just waiting for the time
when i've done most of the editor and core foundation part
(which is a really huge task) and i can focus completely on Ruby
specific things.

I think then i can add a few new arguments to the Ruby IDE <-> General
Editor discussion.
