Application and web app technologies

I do not intend to start any kind of flame war, but only to seek advice
about different technologies concerning which I am mostly ignorant.

I really do not want to see Yet Another "My Language/Toolkit Can Beat Up You Language/Toolkit" thread (which, despite all the best intentions, is where such topics often lead). The new year *just* started.

Rather than rehashing it all, perhaps people can just post links to existing resources that make a case for one or anther technology.
