I've been to the website and read the docs, and maybe I'm dense. But I'm
still not sure what Rubyx is doing. I think I understand that the goal is
to eventually end up with 'The Distro That Rubyx Built', so-to-speak. But
I don't get the process.
Ok; Let me understand what you don't get so I can fix the documentation.
Does it
1) Digest my current distro to create a new distro?
No. rubyx is a script which can be run from an existing distro to create a new
Rubyx distro on a seperate partition or directory. It does not effect your
current distro in any way.
Or 2) Create a brand new distro by downloading source from all over the
internet?
Yes. rubyx is a small script which knows all about how to create Rubyx the OS
from source code. It will download and build all necessary packages from the
rubyx server.
Or 3) Does it create an ISO image? If so is it expecting to run cdrecord
to put on a CD?
Yes/No. Once you have build a Rubyc distro, rubyx has the ability to create a
bootable CD image (ISO) file. You can use cdrecord or whatever to burn this
to a cd/dvd.
Or 4) What if you're running ruby under Windows? What do you do then?
Does it trash your Windows OS and replace it with Linux?
You won't be able to create Rubyx from Windows. (Caveat: I haven't tried
running rubyx under cygwin; that may be possible.)
Or 5) Maybe it just takes over your already-existil Linux machine and
re-writes it using the new Rubyx way.??
That would be just plain rude
See previous answers.
Or 6) Does it just re-use a file-system only? Maybe it creates its own
partitions and assigns its own choice of FS type.
You must decide where you want to build rubyx, and partition your drive(s)
accordingly. Some instructions are given in the 'Installing Rubyx'
documentation on the website.
You see I'm just not sure where all this is going. If you could give one
paragraph saying what is happening here, I would really appreciate it.
Hope this helps ![]()
