Mahoro is a (very) simple and straightforward interface to the libmagic
interface, a C library to the well known file(1). It is released in the
Public Domain and may be downloaded from:
http://www.rufuran.org/mahoro.html
It contains an extremely lacking test suite, but is otherwise
functional. On the topic of functionality, it contains a
rather-nonfunctional name; I derived it from Magic -> Mahou -> Mahoro.
A reference is provided for on the website linked above.

Do you know of any significant differences between your library and this
one?

Oops, I didn’t know that existed (I guess I wasn’t very thorough in my
search). It was a very simple thing to code, so I decided to release it
after I wrote it. There are no significant differences except in that
what I wrote seems a bit more complete: you can set flags, check
validity of databases, and so forth. There is no compelling reason to
use one over the other, I’m sorry I didn’t know someone already wrote
an interface.
For what it’s worth, I released mine in the PD.

Thanks for the information. I was going to write an extension to do this
myself, then saw that someone had already done it. Then, I saw that you
had just written an alternative implementation, so I wondered which of
the two I should use.
Thanks,
Ian
