I wanted to install 1.8 in my local directory, so I did:
$ ./configure --prefix=/home/phil/ruby-1.8
$ make
$ make install
The last command there wanted to run forever and this was the type of
output I was seeing before I hit cntrl-C:
mkdir /home/phil/ruby-1.8/lib/ruby/1.8/ruby/1.8/ruby/1.8/ruby/1.8/optparse
lib/ruby/1.8/ruby/1.8/ruby/1.8/optparse/shellwords.rb ->
/home/phil/ruby-1.8/lib/ruby/1.8/ruby/1.8/ruby/1.8/ruby/1.8/optparse/shellwords.rb
I’m on Linux.
